To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Canada Music Week, November 22-28, the Lethbridge branch of the Alberta Registered Music Teachers’ Association (ARMTA) produced a video of students performing works by Canadian composers. The video was viewed by Zoom students, teachers, and families on November 28.
The video concert was attended by 29 students who performed a selection of Canadian composers including Anne Crosby Gaudet, Christine Donkin, Nancy Telfer, Linda Niamath, Andrew Markow, Pierre Gallant, Jean Coulthard, Stephen Chatman, Boris Berlin and Alexina Louie. The students took part in a scavenger hunt and looked for clues about Canadian composers on information slides that were part of the video concert inserted between the performers. During the live portion of the video watch party, 42 students were named annual student exam winners. More than $ 2,000 in prize money was paid out to students for top grades in practical and theory exams earned during exam sessions from December 2019 to August 2020, including the ARMTA Recognition Fund Student Awards, which were given to seven students with the best Grades were awarded both in the field and in the practice theory exam – Melora Bowie, Justine Hendrick, Maren Livingstone, Amy Quan, Selina Sun, Jerry Wang and Zitong Wu. The ARMTA Recognition Fund was founded in 2008. The goal is to increase prices for music competitions and awards in Alberta.
